The USPTO has a lot of online guidance for searching patents (sometimes called 'prior art' searching). Their 'Search for patents' page describes the process in detail. US patents can be searched through the USPTO's Patent Public Search tool, but the 'Search for patents' page also includes international patent databases to search for patents filed elsewhere as well.
If you're looking for live training options, the USPTO also has regular Virtual Events where they walk participants through the searching and/or filing process.
The PTRC can also help you learn how to do patent prior art searching, either through virtual meetings, or in person at The Ohio State University Libraries. If you'd like further guidance, please email the PTRC Representatives at lib-ptrc@osu.edu.
