According to the USPTO website, "A trademark can be any word, phrase, symbol, design, or a combination of these things that identifies your goods or services. It’s how customers recognize you in the marketplace and distinguish you from your competitors." Common trademarks are company names, slogans, logos, etc. but you can also potentially trademark sounds, colors, scents and more. You can read more about trademarks on this USPTO page.
