SEC filings are primarily used to access financial information for public companies (balance sheet, income statement, cash flow statement and statement of shareholder's equity).  10K and 10Q filings are perhaps the most commonly accessed (annual reports and quarterly reports, respectively).  The SEC page "Using Edgar to Research Investments" will give you an overview of filing types and content.  Or, you can contact the Business Librarian for more information.
